The word more Mainers have trouble spelling, according to Google

Is there a word that you always have to look up — one that’s relatively easy-to-spell, but still trips you up?

Based on this new analysis by Google, Mainers apparently have trouble spelling the word “vacuum” (or is it vaccum? vaquum?) We’re not alone. Montanans and Wisconsinites also searched for that word’s spelling a lot.

The all-knowing search giant released this map in a tweet recently, showing which words people in the US search for online along with the phrase “how to spell.” (Click on the map to see a larger version.)

People in New Hampshire apparently struggle with “diarrhea” — the spelling of the word, that is — and Massachusetts has the most trouble with, well, Massachusetts. That’s right, people in the Bay State most often Google the spelling of “Massachusetts.” Amazing.

Google released the map during the fourth round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which ended in a tie on Thursday night.
