This Washington County restaurant’s lobster roll was named best in Maine and Mass.

A recent list of the best lobster rolls in Maine and Massachusetts from, a list site from USA Today, has a lot of the usual suspects.

Red’s Eats in Wiscasset makes an appearance, as does The Clam Shack in Kennebunk. Seven of the 10 are in Maine, which has us asking how three Massachusetts rolls made the list, but hey, it’s from a national magazine.

The big surprise here is the top spot, which goes to Bayview Takeout in Beals. The small community is nearly two hours east of Bangor (and about three and a half hours from Portland), so it’s a wonder readers even found the place, which serves the classic lobster roll in a buttered hot dog roll (i.e. a real lobster roll) at a takeout window in the Washington County island community.

If you’ve been looking for a good excuse to explore Maine’s Bold Coast, this is a pretty good one. If you can’t make it to Beals, click here for nine more great options from Kennebunkport to Eastport.

What do you think? Did they get it right?

Correction: The Clam Shack is in Kennebunk, not Kennebunkport.
