BuzzFeed takes a crack at Maine’s signature drink

The Miami ice cocktail is one of several libations featured at ice bar at the Portland Harbor Hotel this weekend. Food stations, featuring local restaurants will be inside, allowing revelers a chance to warm up. BDN photo by Kathleen Pierce.

Those hardworking folks at BuzzFeed have taken a whack at each state’s, plus the District of Columbia’s, signature drink. Some of these range from the traditional Mint Julep of Kentucky to the Smoked Salmon Bloody Mary of Alaska (Smoked Salmon Vodka, V-8 Juice, Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, salt and pepper).

What drink signifies the character of our fine state? Well, that honor would have to go to Dust to Dust, a drink that has its home at the Portland bar Grace. What’s in the glass? Cold River Vodka (made in Maine), Domaine deCanton ginger liqueur, Aperol and ginger syrup.

Not a drop of Allen’s or Moxie to be found in this cocktail. That honor goes to the Buxton Slinga, the unsung hero of Maine cocktails.

Just for comparisons sake, here’s a list of other signature New England cocktails.

New Hampshire: The Gin-Esaisquoi (Lillet blanc, Velvet Falermum, egg whites and orange bitters).

Vermont: The Old Vermont (Gin, maple syrup, lemon juice, orange juice, and bitters).

Massachusetts: The Cape Codder (Vodka and cranberry juice).

Connecticut: The Limonata (Vodka, sparkling lemonade and blood-orange juice).

Rhode Island: Rhode Island Red (Partida Blanco tequila, chambord, lemon juice, agave nectar, orange bitters and ginger beer).
