When people leave Maine, where do they go?

The Census Bureau has a super-fascinating tool that allows you to see where people are coming and going from every county in the country.

Surprised?

The blue counties are where people are going (from Penobscot County, in this case). The orange counties are where people are coming from.

The maps are fascinating. The Atlantic wrote about it his week, and they pointed out that some cities, like Los Angeles, get people from all over.

Meanwhile, cities like Minneapolis are more regional, attracting people mostly from the Midwest.

It’s probably not a surprise that Maine tends to draw more regional migration than national.

'cept Washington, Knox, Oxford and Androscoggin

When people leave The County, the go more to Maine than other counties.

Washington County? Most people stick close to home. And Portland.

Maybe it's because of the university?

And Franklin County

Portland gets migrants from all over the state, except Hancock and Oxford Counties. Possibly because there are a lot of vacation homes in those counties?

Hellooo, Portland.

And apparently there’s a contingent of ex-Portlanders in Western Massachusetts.

Fascinating stuff. Click on the link and check out the Census mapper for yourself.

P.S. Thank you Amy and James for pointing out that one of my maps was Minneapolis, not Milwaukee. Admittedly my Midwestern geography knowledge is pretty awful.
